As part of a year-long volunteer effort, I developed the Web Site you are viewing and I truly hope it is both enjoyable and professionally fulfilling. This work is dedicated to kids and teachers everywhere. In the event you would prefer to view the “official” MAPS Web Site, take a gander .
.
Before we continue, you may be interested in a very short history behind my work ...

In 1994, just prior to my wife, Nancy, and I moving back “home” to Marquette [we were married at Saint Peter’s Cathedral in 1962], I was at a ‘crossroad’ because I truly didn't know what Our Lord wanted me to do. I was a retired Air Force officer who had accomplished several things, principally in the areas of science and finance. All I remember was that everything failed that did not point to Marquette and that everything that did point to Marquette succeeded.
.
But I was still frustrated because I experienced alot of turn-downs, and just one success [NMU] in my job search ... one day I spilled out all this frustration to a Catholic priest in Virginia who patiently listened, then said “John ... you’re trying too hard!” ... and then disappeared from the room.
.
Good Grief! I knew only one way to try and that’s try hard! I thought about Father’s words for a long time and just could not figure out their meaning. While thinking about them one day, I eyed a statue of Saint Joseph, foster father of Our Blessed Lord. I then said something to the effect “If moving to Marquette is what you and Jesus want us to do, I promise to devote all my free time to kids and teaching them ... and please let me know by making us very happy in Marquette.”
.
Well ... Nancy and I were extraordinarily happy ... Nancy with her dog grooming business and I with teaching a Computer Information Systems course at NMU, together with working as a volunteer at Whitman Elementary, Sandy Knoll Elementary and Bothwell Middle schools.
.
After a year volunteering at MAPS, I continued my volunteering at the Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum, teaching CCD at Saint Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey, visiting Nursing Homes, working with the kids at Sundara House and visiting the sick at the hospitals. I still continue to modify and, hopefully, to improve this Web Site for your benefit.
.
By the way, it took me about 3 years to finally figure out what that priest in Virginia meant by “John ... you’re trying too hard!” What I was too slow to learn was that I was doing all the ‘trying’ and not letting God do the trying, with Him leading and me following ... or, as an acquaintance of mine said ... “If God is your co-pilot, switch seats!”.
